We currently use a 4 x6 x 1 2 lintel with a span of 204 for masonry support over 16 garage door openings.

The old wooden lintel over the garage door has rotten away leaving the brick work over to sag and bow.

The inspector noticed that a steel plate acting as lintel beam is running over the garage door to support the brick layer above but it ended up 3 inches short on one end.
For a proper lintel to span a 16 garage door opening it would have to minimally be 4 x 11.

Understanding that the sheer weight of this size lintel is not practical on the job the smaller sized lintels are designed to be attached the header which is designed to carry the load.
Many times i work on houses where there is 10 to 15 ft or more of brick above the lintel hardly limited.
Anytime i ve done a new construction double car garage the steel is already mounted by the framers and i m pretty sure it s an h beam with a brickledge welded to it.
We use 3 4 x 6 lags and we use 16 of them in to the glulam headers.

We recommend a minimum l5x3x5 16 llv to be bolted to the wood header with 1 2 x 3 1 2.
